.DISCUSSION... Issued at 114 PM CDT Sun Sep 7 2025
This afternoon, high pressure is centered along the mid to upper Mississippi Valley resulting in fair weather and light winds across central Illinois. Temps will bottom out in the low to mid 40s once more tonight under a favorable radiational cooling setup. Surface ridge axis will begin to inch to our east Monday kicking off a gradual warming trend that will persist into midweek.
A strong upper ridge currently centered over the western CONUS will shift east across the Great Plains through the latter half of the upcoming week. This will set the stage for temps to return well above normal with some highs near or into the 90s possible south of I-72 Wednesday and then area-wide Thursday through next weekend. Despite the warmer temperatures, surface high shifts to New England with ridging extending back into the southern Great Plains which will not allow favorable low level trajectories for any notable moisture return into the Midwest. While dew points do recover some from the current very dry air mass, deep mixing should generally keep surface dew points in the 50s, if not 40s at times, through the latter half of the week. This combination of dry air with synoptic scale subsidence under the upper ridge will favor dry conditions across central Illinois through next weekend.
