Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Columbia SC 106 AM EDT Mon Sep 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure building in from the north will bring cooler and drier weather to the area for the first half of the week. Mainly dry conditions will continue for the remainder of the week, with temperatures gradually warming as the week goes on.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Key Message(s):

- Cooler and drier air slowly moving into the area. - Breezy at times during the afternoon.

Water Vapor loop early this morning shows a couple of features of interest that will impact the area for the next 24 hours. First is the clear mark of drier air over the northeastern half of the CWA. It is moving only very slowly southeastward with time, Therefore, while dewpoints will be dropping indicating near surface drying as sprawling high pressure builds over the northeastern U.S., the mid clouds will stick around well into the day. Another impact from the high will be a tightening surface pressure gradient, allowing the winds to freshen up during the day. We should hang just below lake wind advisory, but it will be a bit choppy for those heading out on area lakes.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... Key message(s):

- Tuesday will likely be the coolest day of the week. Low threat for a passing shower or two along and east of I-95.

- Wednesday is slightly warmer but temperatures remain near to slightly below seasonal values.

Weak upper troughing will be in place to our west during the short term. At the surface, strong high pressure centered over New England will maintain northeasterly flow while an inverted trough keeps a moisture gradient across the coastal plain. A passing shower or two cannot be ruled out on Tuesday into Tuesday night, mainly along and east of I-95, when the PWAT gradient tries to push inland across the eastern Midlands. A strengthening wedge pattern pushes a reinforcing shot of drier air into the region on Wednesday with mostly sunny skies and slightly warmer, albeit near to slightly below normal, daytime temperatures.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... Key message(s):

- Continued dry with near normal temperatures through the period.

An upper trough remains positioned over the east coast through the long term. Meanwhile, surface high pressure maintains a northeasterly flow and dry weather with rain not expected through the weekend. Temperatures will be near seasonal values Thursday and Friday and may be slightly cooler during the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /05Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... Some temporary MVFR cigs are expected for a few hours overnight (except likely hanging longer at OGB), but drier air in the lower layers should gradually push into the region with VFR expected from mid morning into tonight. Northeasterly winds will get a bit breezy today with gusts in the 20 knot range expected.

EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...A cooler and drier air mass will settle over the region early this week behind the front.

.CAE WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... SC...None. GA...None.
