Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Baltimore MD/Washington DC 227 AM EDT Thu Sep 18 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Low pressure dissipates offshore of the Mid-Atlantic today as high pressure builds in through the rest of the week. A cold front moves through Friday night, then another high pressure builds in through early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/... A weakening low pressure over the Virginia Tidewater will slowly drift offshore and dissipate today. Abundant cloud cover, drizzle, and fog early this morning will start to burn off after sunrise. Weak high pressure builds over the region for the next couple of days. Dry conditions are expected this afternoon as light northwest winds prevail. Above normal temperatures today as highs reach the low to mid 80s. Mostly clear skies tonight as lows settle in the mid 50s to low 60s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/... Mid-level ridging builds over the OH Valley Friday, then moves east across the Mid-Atlantic to eastern Great Lakes region. This helps bring about well above normal temperatures Friday afternoon as highs reach the mid to upper 80s. Dry conditions and light northwest winds continue. A dry cold front moves through Friday night, though no significant airmass changes are expected behind the front.

A strong Canadian high pressure builds from Ontario into New England on Saturday. This ushers in the return of easterly flow and increased marine stratocu over the area. Highs Saturday will be at normal values for mid/late September in the upper 70s to around 80F. A few showers are possible in the Alleghenies Saturday afternoon, though conditions are likely to be dry for the most part. Mild conditions Saturday night with temps mostly in the 60s.

&&

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... A weak boundary will spread a shower or two to parts of the area Sunday. High temperatures will be in the upper 70s to lower 80s. Sunday night`s lows will drop into the 50s and 60s.

High pressure will build into the region Monday and Tuesday, resulting in dry conditions and warmer temperatures. The next chance for showers will be Tuesday night and into the day on Wednesday as a boundary moves into region. Most of the shower activity that could occur would be more likely in the western zones as dry air may hold in place in the central and eastern areas. High temperatures lower 80s Monday and lower to middle 80s on Tuesday. Wednesday should reach the 80s as well.

&&

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... A weak low pressure over southeast Virginia is producing widespread low clouds and fog this morning. Impacts are ongoing at all terminals, with widespread IFR to LIFR conditions. Clouds and fog start to burn off after sunrise, with VFR conditions returning by early afternoon at the latest. Beyond this morning, VFR conditions are expected to prevail through Saturday.

VFR conditions Sunday through Monday night. Winds generally southeast 5 to 10 knots through the period.

&&

.MARINE... Northerly winds are diminishing over the waters this morning, and are expected to remain well below SCA levels through Friday night. A cold front moves across the waters early Saturday morning. Northerly channeling behind the front could result in near SCA conditions over portions of the Chesapeake Bay Saturday morning and again Saturday evening.

No marine hazards Sunday through Monday night. Winds generally southeast 10 knots gusts up to 15 knots through the period.

&&

.TIDES/COASTAL FLOODING... Tidal anomalies remain elevated this morning, with some sensitive locations reaching minor flood during high tide.
