Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 147 PM EDT Mon Sep 15 2025

.SYNOPSIS... High pressure will keep our weather dry through this evening. A coastal low may bring an opportunity for light rain beginning tonight, lingering through Wednesday night. Dry conditions return for the latter half of the week, with another increase in rain chances over the weekend and into early next week.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TUESDAY/... As of 130 PM EDT Monday...

Key Message:

1) Mostly dry through this evening, but increasing clouds and rainfall chances through Tuesday.

Dry weather continues through this afternoon and evening with light northerly flow due to high pressure wedging and low pressure moving north along the North Carolina coast.

Increasing cloud cover through tonight. Some showers may begin to push into the Piedmont from the east after sunset this evening with only light rainfall amounts. Overnight, additional showers push farther west. Overnight lows will be in the mid to upper 50s.

Low pressure will move further west on Tuesday, and showers could potentially reach as far west as the I-81 corridor, however the best chance for any beneficial rainfall will remain east of the Blue Ridge over central Virginia and north central North Carolina. Winds may be a bit gusty at times with a few locations in the east gusting in the 20 to 25mph range.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... As of 100 PM EDT Monday...

Key Messages:

1. Rain through Wednesday. Dry conditions return Thursday.

2. Cooler temperatures through the middle of the week, but warmer Thursday.

A low pressure system will be drifting through eastern NC and VA Tuesday and Wednesday, bringing periods of light to moderate rain. The heavier rainfall totals will be east of the Blue Ridge, closer to the low, where lift is greatest. At this time, amounts range from half an inch to three quarters of an inch from the foothills into the VA Southside and Piedmont of VA and NC. However, there is a 10 percent probability of rainfall exceeding an inch and a half east of a Martinsville VA to Lynchburg VA line, the high end amount of rain. Most likely amounts will be less than an inch for most.

The low wobbles slightly westward, and then back to the east and pulls offshore of the Delmarva Peninsula Thursday. As the low pulls away, a surface high will build back into the region, and bring a return to dry weather.

Expect temperatures to be cooler than normal, in the 60s for most of the area Wednesday afternoon, with mostly cloudy to overcast skies and increasing northerly to northeasterly flow. Thursday will be warmer, with highs around 80 in the Piedmont and the 70s west of the Blue Ridge.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 130 PM EDT Monday...

Key Messages:

1. Increasing chances for showers and isolated thunderstorms over the weekend, following dry weather on Friday.

2. Near to just above normal temperatures Friday and Saturday, slightly cooler on Sunday and Monday.

High pressure will build southward from southern Canada for the end of the work week, wedging against the eastern side of the Appalachians, and keeping Friday dry. Increasing 500mb heights from ridging developing aloft, along with clearer skies, will lead to warmer temperatures, around 5 to 10 degrees above normal by Friday afternoon. An upper low will move across the north central US, and push a cold front towards the Midwest and Ohio Valley, eventually reaching the local area by the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /18Z MONDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/... As of 140 PM EDT Monday...

Widespread VFR this afternoon, which looks to continue into the early overnight hours. Rain showers and lower clouds may move into LYH/DAN by early Tuesday morning and sub-VFR will be possible as early as midnight and then linger through the latter portions of the current 24hr TAF period. BCB/BLF/LWB/ROA should remain VFR, with the only exception being some brief patchy fog at LWB around daybreak.

Winds will generally remain out of the N-NE, but will increase along and east of the Blue Ridge tomorrow. Could have gusts exceeding 20kts at times from ROA and east on Tuesday.

EXTENDED AVIATION FORECAST...

Rain and clouds will linger through Wednesday, associated with low pressure slowly moving northward along the coast. This could bring periods of sub-VFR, mainly east of the mountains.

Drier and sunnier weather returns again for Thursday and Friday, but the chance for showers or perhaps an isolated thunderstorm returns for the weekend and into early next week.
