Northern Alaska Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Fairbanks AK 320 PM AKDT Mon Sep 22 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Cooler and unsettled weather is expected through much of the upcoming week across Northern Alaska. Cloudy conditions will continue across the Interior as a trough working east continues to support isolated to scattered rain and snow showers across the Interior, Alaska/Brooks Ranges, and North Slope. Light accumulating snow will remain confined to the higher elevations and mountain passes, with warmer ground temperatures in the valleys limiting any accumulation. Generally cool and mostly dry conditions continue for the West Coast and Western Interior with increased chances of precipitation for Thursday and Friday. Confidence in the forecast past Thursday decreases, but overall low impact weather is expected to continue through the weekend as isolated to scattered showers and cooler temperatures persist.

.FORECAST ANALYSIS AND DISCUSSION...Today through Thursday. Early afternoon satellite imagery shows a upper level trough working east across Northern Alaska, guided by a larger low in the Arctic Ocean. This system is continuing to pull in cooler air out of the north, in addition to supporting isolated to scattered rain and snow showers across the Interior, Alaska/Brooks Ranges, and North Slope. As this is happening, a low at the base of the overall troughing pattern in the Gulf of Alaska also moves east and allows some moisture to wrap around the Alaska Range into the Eastern Interior. Light accumulating snow around a T-3" through Tuesday will remain confined to the higher elevations and mountain passes, with warmer ground temperatures in the valleys limiting any accumulation. As this trough shifts east tonight into Tuesday, progressively drier and warmer conditions build in out of the west as a weak transitory ridge of high pressure builds in for Wednesday, marking the warmest day for the rest of the week across the Interior.

Further west, another low in the Bering Sea will continue to work southeast into the Gulf of Alaska Tuesday into Wednesday as a secondary low builds in right behind out of Eastern Russia. Through midweek, conditions will remain mostly dry across the West Coast outside of Southwest Alaska. At the same time that these systems makes their progression southeast through the Aleutians down into the Gulf, yet another low building out of eastern Russia will begin shifting southeast for Thursday into Friday. This series of systems in a broad upper level troughing pattern will support increased precipitation chances Thursday across the Interior and Western Alaska as cooler temperatures return, following a brief warmup for the Interior on Wednesday.

.HYDROLOGY... No concerns at this time.

&&

.EXTENDED FORECAST DAYS 4-7...Friday through next Monday. Cool and unsettled weather will continue across Northern Alaska through the extended forecast period, as a series of lows and a broad upper level troughing pattern work to support a mix of rain and snow showers region wide along with cooler temperatures into early next week. Given these progressively cooler conditions, we will see increasing chances for snow in the valleys as is par for the course this time of year, especially during the overnight and early morning hours. Model guidance continues to vary on the specifics of each one of these systems this far out, but light overall totals continue to be expected amongst ensemble means.

Coastal Hazard Potential Days 3 and 4...None
