Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Wilmington OH 654 AM EDT Thu Sep 25 2025

.SYNOPSIS... A strong upper level longwave trough will cross the region as it moves eastward today. Ahead of this, showers and some thunderstorms will occur and spread northeast and be found generally east of the I-71 corridor. Friday will mark the end of any rain in the region, with little found for the remainder of the forecast.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Rain over nrn KY with some isolated pockets of deeper convection producing thunder will persist, with the eastern edge making a gentle northern push along the Scioto River. In the next few hours, the region of rain will remain in nrn KY but then extend more ne versus just e as it is currently found. NW of the I-71 corridor is not necessarily dry this morning, but will be scattered in nature and transient. Rainfall rates are exceeding 1"/hr over portions of nrn KY where the convection is strongest, and the area near the Bracken, Pendleton, Robertson intersection seems to have been influenced by a weak mesovort, and an advisory has been placed for this area attm.

This area of rain will continue to see a ne movement in the cells and precip this morning. The upper low in the l/w trough is pushing into nw OH this afternoon. Rain will scatter out well ahead of it with most of the CWA showing a marked decrease towards noon, and some very light showers then evolving into passing sprinkles by early evening.

Low cloud cover and precip will keep today`s highs in the mid-upper 70s.

&&

.SHORT TERM /FRIDAY/... Clearing overnight is expected to occur in the late evening, at least for a few hours. If it truly clears and the boundary layer is permitted to radiate, expect a ground level stratus deck to form, likely leading to areas of dense fog. Overnight lows will bottom out in the mid 50s for most locations, coolest over IN and west central OH and warmest over KY and Scioto County.

The upper pattern should split with the stronger low and vort maxima tracking east, splitting off of a remaining circulation to the south that meanders further south into southern KY by late day. With the atmosphere being worked over the past several periods, sky cover will clear out and temperatures will rise into the upper 70s with a light northerly/nw wind around 5-8 mph.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/... Heading into the weekend, a pesky but weak upper level low continues to meander over the Ohio Valley and Appalachians. So despite the ridge building over the central CONUS into the Great Lakes, the upper level low will supply potential for clouds and even some shower activity. Mid and upper level clouds extend throughout the area, but any showers are limited to southern/southeast Ohio and northeast Kentucky. High and low temperatures a few degrees above normal but steady day to day.

Early next week, tropical activity in the western Atlantic will interact with the upper level low, complicating its evolution. The overall weather remains similar to the weekend with occasional clouds with the potential for showers across far southeast portions of the local area (southern Ohio, northeast Kentucky). Until the tropical situation becomes more clear, confidence is low on how quickly the upper level low clears out of the region.

Toward the end of the period, there are some hints that the central CONUS ridge builds more firmly over the local area, settling the Ohio River region into a renewed dry stretch.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/... A mix of conditions with higher cloud bases than earlier expected are over much of the CWA and terminals this morning. Only some of the lower IFR and low end MVFR clouds are found and they`re scattered at the terminals attm. Expect these low clouds to continue to enter and thicken from west to east as it trails the more widespread light rain found over the eastern 2/3 of CWA. A trailing edge of showers is currently located from near Lima towards Indianapolis and will see more scattered light shower activity fill in ahead of it as it moves east with the mean airmass.

MVFR vsbys with only lower chances of IFR cigs are being offered at KDAY this early morning. If the IFR cigs look to expand across the region, then this will need to be accounted by an amendment. Guidance had been hitting pretty hard at these lower clouds centered around this time. There are locations close by that are being hit by these conditions but they aren`t at the airports attm. However it works, MVFR cigs will be found by late morning, then lift in the afternoon and scatter out after dark.

Clearing skies should be found overnight. Fog is being noted at LUK and ILN, with a lesser hit at CVG and DAY tomorrow morning and CMH/LCK with slightly higher vsbys as their clearing occurs the latest.

Wind for all the terminals today will be nnw 5-7kt during the day and drop under 3kt after 00Z.

OUTLOOK...areas of dense fog are possible before daybreak Friday.
