...Synopsis...
Cooler air retreats east today with a ridge building to the west.
Lows could fall into the upper 30s in some areas tonight, although
most locations should see temperatures in the 40s. Heading into
Monday, moisture and warmer temperatures return to the area, with
afternoon highs in the 70s to near 80 degrees. A shortwave is
expected to traverse the region late Monday evening through early
Tuesday morning, bringing a chance for showers and thunderstorms to
parts of southeast North Dakota and west central Minnesota. While a
few storms could produce small hail, the probability for severe
thunderstorms is quite low. Heading into Tuesday afternoon, the H5
ridge works slowly eastward, with the axis centered in western North
Dakota. By Wednesday, the ridge axis will be near the ND/MN border.
Temperatures will reflect this as WAA continues, and afternoon highs
Tuesday and Wednesday are expected to be in the upper 70s to near 80
in many areas. Moving into Thursday, southwest flow moves into
western and central North Dakota as the aforementioned ridge
continues to the east. Shortwaves will traverse the upstream side of
the ridge, bringing showers and thunderstorms back into the forecast
for Thursday onward into the weekend. This also sets the stage for
an unsettled pattern that could support several rounds of strong
thunderstorms, although details at this time are minimal. Looking at
GEFS ensemble probability for 1000 J/Kg of CAPE, parts of the
southern Red River Valley and west central Minnesota are around the
50 to 60 percent mark Friday afternoon and evening.

VFR conditions prevail through the period at all TAF sites. Look
for mostly clear skies at KGFK, KFAR, and KDVL with scattered
cumulus at KBJI and KTVF. Cloud cover is expected to slowly
increase overnight; however, VFR conditions will likely continue
at all sites. Winds remain out of the southwest this afternoon
and will gradually become southerly overnight, generally
remaining less than 12 knots through the period.
