Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Hastings NE 101 AM CDT Fri Sep 5 2025

...Aviation Update...

.KEY MESSAGES...

- Hazy skies this afternoon...associated with wildfire smoke streaming down from Montana...will gradually improve this evening and overnight as a cold front rapidly tracks south across the local area.

- There will be a 3-6 hour window ahead of the main cold front this evening where a few thunderstorms could develop across the local area...with the highest probabilities across north central Kansas. Can`t rule out a strong thunderstorm, but severe weather is not anticipated.

- Behind the cold front...light rain showers should develop across much of the area during the late night hours tonight. Precipitation totals outside thunderstorms will be minimal, with most locations expected to see only a trace to maybe a tenth of of an inch of rain.

- Cool temperatures (upper 60s & low 70s) and dry weather anticipated Friday afternoon and through the upcoming weekend, with small precipitation chances returning Monday and Tuesday. Temperatures will also increase next week, with highs in the upper 70s Monday climbing into at least the mid and possibly upper 80s by mid-week.

.DISCUSSION... Issued at 528 AM CDT Thu Sep 4 2025

Cloudy and hazy skies were observed across the local area this morning. Clouds cleared but hazy skies remained this afternoon as smoke from wildfires in Montana continued to stream southeast across the local area. A few locations briefly reported visibilities falling to as low as 6 miles in smoke at times, but this hazy smoke should rapidly clear across the area this evening as a cold front descends from the north.

Ahead of this cold front, could see a few thunderstorms develop late this evening, especially across our Kansas counties. Not all the CAMS are showing this, although the 18Z NamNEST continues to try and fire a few stronger looking storms across north central Kansas around 6Z. If these storms are able to fire off across Rooks/Osborne/Mitchell counties as advertised, could see some marginal hail and strong wind gusts in the 10 PM to 2 AM time frame. Thereafter...models are indicating some light stratiform type precipitation developing behind the frontal boundary, which could bring some light precip to much of the area just before daybreak. This does not look significant, with most locations expected to only receive between and trace and maybe a tenth of an inch of accumulation when all is said and done.

Skies should eventually clear out across the area by midday Friday, with a cool, dry and sunny weekend in store for the local area in the wake of the aforementioned cold front. In fact, could see a fairly chilly fall like morning across the area to start the weekend Saturday morning, with latest guidance showing Ord could dip into the 30s to start the day (ranging from 35-39). Current forecast is not quite this cool, but it is something to keep an eye on in case guidance continues this downward trend.

Aloft...primarily north northwesterly flow will then continue into early next week, with a small chance for showers and thunderstorms returning to the area Monday and Tuesday, before a ridge of high pressure moves in from the west, ending precip chances and potentially brining more summerlike weather back to the local area by the end of next week.

.AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z SATURDAY/... Issued at 101 AM CDT Fri Sep 5 2025

For KGRI/KEAR Airports: High confidence VFR ceiling/visibility through the period, although especially the first 15 hours will feature abundant mid-level clouds (mainly based at/above 10K ft.). There could also be a few/scattered lower-VFR clouds (based mainly 5-7K ft) around during the afternoon-evening, but overall skies should be on a clearing trend.

Precipitation-wise, primarily 08-14Z there could be intermittent light rainfall as a band of light showers sets up over the general area in a west-northwest to east-southeast orientation. This should be a rather minor precipitation "event", but have maintained a PROB30 group to acknowledge it.

Winds will not be a notable issue, with the overall-strongest speeds focused during the day 15-22Z...out of the northwest commonly sustained 10-15KT/gusts 15-20KT. Both before and after these slightly breezier conditions, sustained speeds will largely prevail under 10KT...mainly out of the northwest early this morning, and then downright light/variable direction Friday evening.
