Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 649 AM EDT Mon Sep 8 2025

.SYNOPSIS... Dry high pressure builds in tonight and will remain the dominant weather feature through the week, resulting in sunny and dry conditions through next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... As of 135 AM EDT Monday...

Key Message:

-Dry conditions with chilly overnights and mild afternoons.

Surface high pressure continues to build overhead and conditions will remain dry and mostly clear through tonight. Morning lows will be chilly in the 40s, but should quickly warm into the upper 60s to mid 70s by the afternoon. Breezy northeast winds in the afternoon, but will become light/calm again overnight. Perhaps some isolated valley fog this morning, but confidence is low given the dry airmass in place.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/... As of 145 AM EDT Monday...

Key Message:

1) Quiet weather continues.

Not a whole lot to say about the weather for the next few days. A high surface pressure system over New England will continue to wedge into the mountains and eventually move east. Relatively high pressure will still remain over the Mid-Atlantic and provide clear to partly cloudy skies and keep conditions overall dry and relatively cool. Early morning temperatures will be in the mid-40s to mid-50s. Temperatures will subtly increase later this week with highs eventually reaching into the lower 70s to lower 80s. Dew points are forecast to be in the mid-40s to mid-50s. The only change in weather currently expected is early morning patchy fog near lakes, rivers, and other bodies of water. A shortwave makes its way into the area by the middle of this week, but with stable and dry conditions, precipitation is very unlikely.

&&

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 145 AM EDT Monday...

Key Message:

1) Autumn weather conditions continue.

The dry and relatively cool weather will continue into the weekend and likely into early next week. Another separate surface high will pass near New England and wedge into the mountains again, keeping skies stable and clear for the foreseeable future. Model guidance suggests an upper level low may traverse into the Mid- Atlantic early next week, but it is too early to know for certain on its potential path and impacts. Otherwise, dew points will remain in the 50s for the region, low morning temperatures will also be in the 50s, and high temperatures will range from the mid-70s to the lower 80s.

&&

.AVIATION /12Z MONDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/... As of 645 AM EDT Monday...

Mostly VFR expected through the valid 24 hour TAF period. Some patchy early morning fog this morning, but should be rather shallow and quickly dissipate, given the dry airmass in place.

Breezy northeast winds this afternoon, with some gusts possible around 15kts. Winds will become light/calm again tonight.

.EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

VFR conditions expected through the coming week, outside any patchy late night/early morning fog.
