.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES...

.SHORT TERM (Today through Thursday)... A low pressure system moving inland along the West Coast will bring stronger onshore flow and dry southwest flow aloft. It will be cooler today with high temperatures as much as 5 to 10 degrees below average for the inland valleys onto the lower coastal slopes of the mountains. The marine layer is deepening and will deepen to 4000 to 4500 feet early this morning.

Satellite imagery shows patchier coverage of low clouds over the coastal waters with more widespread coverage over the coast and valleys onto the lower coastal slopes of the mountains. While the marine layer has been deepening, cloud bases along the coast have been increasing as well to mostly above 3000 to 3500 feet. Even over land areas, coverage is less than uniform with limited vertical extent to the clouds. This is less supportive for drizzle with coverage of patchy drizzle reduced for early this morning.

For Wednesday and Thursday, the low pressure system will move inland and weaken. High pressure to the south will bring warming with the marine layer decreasing in depth. High temperatures will warm a few degrees on Wednesday and a few more degrees on Thursday, but with high temperatures still a few to around 5 degrees below average on Thursday. High temperatures on Thursday will range from the lower 70s near the coast to the lower to mid 80s for the Inland Empire with the lower to mid 90s for the lower deserts.

.LONG TERM (Friday through Monday)... The next low pressure system moving inland through California will bring a few to around 5 degrees of cooling on Friday with high temperatures another 5 degrees cooler for inland areas on Saturday. With the cooling, high temperatures on Saturday for inland areas will be as much as 5 to 10 degrees below average.

For Sunday and Monday, there is greater spread in the high temperature guidance due to differences in the strength and placement of low pressure over California and Nevada. The calibrated deterministic NBM is slightly warmer on Sunday, then slight cooler on Monday.
