.SHORT TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/... Issued at 332 PM CDT Thu Sep 4 2025
Smoke from the Canadian wildfires will continue to impact portions of north central Nebraska through early evening. While the majority of the smoke will remain aloft, some smoke may make it to the surface and cause reductions in visibility down to 5 miles at times. Those sensitive to smoke or with breathing issues should use extra precautions through the evening.
A weak frontal boundary will then push into the region by mid evening helping to disperse the smoke impacts. In addition, some showers and isolated thunderstorms will develop along this boundary by late evening lasting into the early Friday morning hours. With minimal instability across the region, not expecting these storms to become severe. However, some stronger winds and brief heavy rainfall may be possible.
As this front pushes through the region, cooler temperatures will also begin to filter into the area. Generally expect lows in the 40s north of Highway 2 and lows in the 50s south of Highway 2.

.LONG TERM /SATURDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... Issued at 332 PM CDT Thu Sep 4 2025
Upper level ridging will will allow for surface high pressure to build across the central US by Friday lasting into early next week. This will keep conditions dry through this timeframe. In addition, cold air advection into the region will push cooler 850 mb temperatures in the 3 to 8 C range out of Canada. This cooler airmass will bring much cooler surface highs to the area beginning on Friday. Highs on Friday will only be in the 60s, but should slowly rise through early next week back into the 80s. High pressure will slowly slide off to the east by Tuesday allowing for a slightly warmer airmass to push back into Nebraska keeping the 80s around through the middle of the week. Overnight lows also become chilly on Friday night and Saturday night with lows ranging from the mid 30s in northern Nebraska to the mid 40s south of I-80. At this time, no frost is expected, but plants or animals sensitive to colder temperatures may be vulnerable. Overnight low temperatures return to near normal (low to mid 50s) by Sunday night, lasting through the extended period.
