.DISCUSSION...

According to the latest RAP upper air analysis, the CWA has a southwesterly upper air flow as it is between a strong upper air low residing off the coast of OR/Northern CA to the west and a Rocky Mountain upper air ridge to the west this morning. Forecast guidance shows the low continuing a eastward progress approaching the Pacific coast and getting closer to the CWA through the day. As a result of this upper air pattern, the CWA expects to see increased southwest-west winds today gusting up to around 30-40 mph with wind prone areas possibly seeing gusts pushing the 50 mph mark. As these winds will cause travel and recreation concerns, a Lake Wind Advisory has been issued for both Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake today. While Northeastern CA sees a 10-15% chance for an isolated shower in the late afternoon/evening today, the remainder of the region looks to stay on the dry side. As such, there are some elevated fire weather concerns within the region today due to the increased winds and dry conditions.

Speaking of fires, the latest run of the HRRR model shows smoke and haze from the Garnet Fire and other wildfires in CA continuing to filter into the CWA today. The higher concentrations of smoke for the area look to be in Mono County (see the current Dense Smoke Advisory) while surrounding areas could see some locally reduced visibilities as well with a good portion of the region seeing hazy skies. While the increased winds during the day may disperse some of the smoky skies, southern portions of the region closer to the fire will not have as much of a reprieve as the smoke looks to build back up a bit in Mono and Mineral Counties again tonight. Please continue to visit GBUAPCD.org and AirNow.gov for the latest information on air quality today.

The temperature forecast today and going through the middle of the week continues the cooling trend with the upper low moving towards the CWA and keeping the warmer air away to the south of the region. While today`s daytime highs expect to be a few degrees lower than those experienced yesterday, the forecast calls for highs in the 60s and 70s generally through the end of the work week. Some Sierra communities look to have freezing or near freezing overnight lows during the week with Wednesday night being the coldest night having a 40-60% NBM probability of 32F or lower. The remaining portions of the region have lows ranging between the 40s and the lower 50s in the forecast. By the weekend, extended guidance shows the low departing the region allowing for temperatures to start to rebound.

The aforementioned Pacific low expects to also bring greater and more widespread precipitation chances to the CWA tomorrow that persist through at least Thursday. Tuesday`s chances for showers and storms look to be 20-40% and then the precipitation chances will increase to their greatest on Wednesday and Thursday with a 30-60% probability. The precipitation chances then taper off to less than 15% on Friday as a drying pattern is seen entering the weekend. Model guidance shows the potential for higher CAPE values in areas closer to the OR border on Wednesday and Thursday, so these locations may see a better chance for thunderstorms. The highest peaks of the Sierra could possibly see a few tenths of an inch of snow as well with temperatures getting cold enough. Will monitor these midweek precipitation chances as a good portion of the region could see a measurable amount by Thursday night and will share more forecast details when they become available. -078

.AVIATION...

While most area TAF sites expect VFR conditions today, the primary weather concern today will be southwest/west surface gusts of 20-30 kts during the afternoon. Mountain wave turbulence and LLWS impacts will also be likely as well with these winds. Otherwise, mostly dry conditions are expected across the region today.

KMMH looks to be the outlier TAF site that will see sub-VFR conditions mostly due to smoke filtering into Mono and Mineral Counties from the Garnet Fire in CA. There may be a brief break between 8/22Z-9/04Z when winds pick up allowing for VFR conditions at KMMH, but models show smoke returning and lowering the visibility once again tonight. Increased smoke production from the Garnet Fire will also further impact slantwise visibilities across the region. -078
