.DISCUSSION...

KEY MESSAGES:

- Below normal temperatures through Saturday with the coldest places experiencing a freeze Saturday morning.

- Dry conditions continue as a warm-up brings a return to summer warmth by Sunday.

WEATHER PATTERN OVERVIEW:

Today will feature lighter winds and increased sunshine as cool Canadian high pressure approaches. This will likely set up the first freeze of the season tonight for some typically colder spots near the Canadian and North Dakota borders with areas of frost common there.

An upper ridge over the Pacific NW is expected to flatten while it drifts into Montana by early next week. This will allow for mainly clear skies and highs rebounding into the 80s Sunday and lasting into midweek. Then, an upper low will push into the Pacific NW that splits with a piece looking to break off into the Canadian Prairies. This set-up gives at least a slight chance of thunderstorms starting Tuesday night as some moisture and instability from the Dakotas pushes back into the area.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE & DEVIATIONS:

Stayed close to the base forecast besides adding some detail to short term winds and temperature spread. There is high confidence in the forecast through Tuesday, then more average confidence thereafter for the extent of rain chances.
