Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Blacksburg VA 131 PM EDT Sun Sep 7 2025

.SYNOPSIS...

Dry high pressure builds in tonight and will remain the dominant weather feature trough the week, resulting in sunny and dry conditions through next weekend.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH MONDAY/... As of 130 PM EDT Sunday...

Key Message:

1) Cool mornings and dry days return as high pressure settles over the region.

Clear skies will overtake the area during the overnight hours tonight as surface high pressure works into the Ohio valley and western Pennsylvania. This will allow temperatures to crash into the low 40s by Monday morning for areas west of the Blue Ridge. Lows east of the Blue Ridge will be similarly cool in the low 50s. Overall, expect clear skies and cool temperatures on Monday, with highs warming up into the low to mid 70s east of the Blue Ridge, and mid to upper 60s west of the Blue Ridge.

&&

.SHORT TERM /MONDAY NIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY NIGHT/... As of 100 PM EDT Sunday...

Key Messages:

1) Quiet weather through the period with no rain chances.

2) Below normal temperatures continue each day.

A large surface high pressure system centered in the Northeastern US will continue to wedge down east of the Appalachians through midweek, though it will weaken and eventually erode late Wednesday as the high shifts offshore and dissipates. No precipitation is expected area-wide through the period, as any vorticity and moisture will remain off to our east along the Atlantic coastline. The synoptic pattern will remain unchanged through the period, resulting in cool, slightly breezy, dry, and much less humid conditions. Cloud cover will remain minimal thanks to very dry air aloft, and northerly winds will gust to 10-15 mph in the afternoon each day.

With the wedge in place on Tuesday, highs will remain cool, in the 60s for the mountains and low to mid 70s for the Piedmont. As the wedge erodes Wednesday, highs slightly rise to area-wide 70s, with a few spots in the Piedmont possibly nearing 80 degrees. Overnight lows will be in the 40s to low 50s each morning, though temperatures moderate a few degrees by midweek. The coldest morning will be Tuesday morning, with the highest elevations possibly falling into the upper 30s to around 40 degrees, with wind chills a few degrees colder.

&&

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/... As of 100 PM EDT Sunday...

Key Messages:

1) Dry streak continues for the end of the week through the weekend.

2) Temperatures remain near to slightly below normal each day.

The tranquil fall-like pattern continues, with low dewpoint values and below normal temperatures. A weak cold front approaches the area from the north on Thursday, but it will be a dry front with no precipitation expected. The front dies out, but a new high pressure system located in Canada fills into the area, reinforcing the cool air across the region. The associated dry air aloft will continue to keep the entire forecast area dry with no chance of precipitation for both the late week and through next weekend. The Canadian high shifts into the Northeast, again wedging down east of the Appalachians. Confidence is high in this forecast.

Temperatures remain below normal through the period, though there will be no significant cold air across the region. Highs will remain around 5 degrees below normal at most, with highs late week in the 70s to low 80s ahead of the dry cold front. Behind the front for the weekend, highs do slightly lower into the 70s area-wide each day. Lows stay in the 50s, with the mountain peaks in the upper 40s each morning. Lows also do fall a few degrees for the weekend behind the front, but stay in the 50s.

.AVIATION /18Z SUNDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/... As of 130 PM EDT Sunday...

Some MVFR CIGs are still lingering at Piedmont terminals such as DAN and LYH this afternoon. These restrictions should lift shortly as high pressure and enough dry air works itself into the area from the northwest through the evening. Overnight clear skies and VFR conditions return to all terminals. Some low probability chances of LIFR VSBYs exist for LWB due to river valley fog.

Low confidence in fog development tonight with drier air settling in, but have included LIFR restrictions for now.

.EXTENDED AVIATION OUTLOOK...

VFR conditions expected through the coming week, outside any patchy late night/early morning fog.
